Program Description

Event Details

The 2023 Pikes Peak Poetry Summit theme is "Art is a Bridge to New Perspectives." This year we are celebrating poetry across Colorado with features from all over the state. Full details of the event here.

In this workshop, we will discuss the intersections of social justice issues and pop culture. Come bring your nerd ideologies to talk about how they interact with issues of representation and equity in this workshop centered around the popular shows, comics, and movies you’re most passionate about.

Michael “Skillzilla” Ferguson is a tall, black man, all too aware that his height and the color of his skin make him particularly vulnerable in America. His writing and scholarship focus on racial and social injustice — and nerd stuff. If Michael isn’t writing, then he’s sitting at home with his spouse, Dr. Sandy Ho, and watching trash television, reading comics or playing video games. He works as a full-time instructor in the First-Year Rhetoric and Writing Program at UCCS. He hopes to be the Black professor for students who look like him that he never had. Michael's classes center the voices of Black and other marginalized communities and scholars. He is always open to talk about Poetry, Comics and Naruto. Feel free to ask him about any of these things if you see him at an open mic.

The workshops are provided at no cost. All workshops are 45 minutes in duration. Please prepare change for the metered parking.

Seats are limited to 50 people for this workshop. Ages 13 and older.
