Hosted by the MAC

This course is a deep dive introduction to surface design with fiber reactive dyes.

Spanning 6 weeks, the classes cover processes and methods to create pattern and design on the surface of fabric, culminating in a length of fabric.

The classes teach how to:

  • thicken fiber reactive dyes
  • mix color
  • make and use resists
  • introduce methods such as stamping
  • thermofax
  • monoprinting

to apply the dyes to the fabric.

Registrants will develop their own motifs as well as using pre-made motifs to explore pattern and texture on different types of fabric provided by the instructor.

Students walk away with practice samples and a final 1/2-1 yard length of fabric they design and dye themselves. This class is great for quilters and sewists who want to use their own signature fabric. It's also great for those who want to learn something new!

Student Supply List:

  • sketch book/notebook
  • folder
  • gloves
  • apron
  • sharpie
  • binder
  • page protectors
  • pins
  • scissors
  • $80 Materials Fee (paid to instructor at first class)

Learning Outcome:

  • safely use fiber reactive dyes
  • thicken dyes
  • mix color

  • use pattern
  • create a length of fabric
  • use the dye lab independently
