Ever since the publication of Richard Wright’s Native Son, the phrase “protest fiction” has been used—by both Black and White critics—to     devalue the Black novel. By discussing several classic novels by prominent Black authors, this class explores “protest” as a defining element of Black fiction, which undeniably supports and defends the premise that “Black Lives Matter.”  Presented by Durthy Washington for Black History Month.
